Article: Second Cup Cafe: Honor Society

CBSNews

(CBS) You may know them from when they warm up the crowd for the Jonas Brothers, but now, Honor Society is touring on their own, and releasing the album, "Fashionably Late," which debuted at No. 18 last month.

Honor Society, which is made up of four guys in their twenties from the New York/ New Jersey area, is the first talent to be signed to the Jonas Brothers' label.

Rolling Stone dubbed the pop-rock group "a breakout band to watch" last spring. They landed an opening spot on one of the best-selling tours of the summer -- the Jonas Brothers'.

The group kicked off their own 40-date tour across the country on Sept. 21. It ends Nov. 23.

The band was formed in 2007 in Rockland County, N.Y., a Manhattan suburb with an active music scene.

Lead singer and guitarist Michael Bruno, keyboardist Jason Rosen and bassist Andrew Lee were seeking a drummer when they got a recommendation to look up Alexander Noyes, who had been a drummer for the Jonas Brothers.

When Noyes left the Jonas Brothers about three years ago, he didn't do it to join Honor Society. He actually left the band, which had not yet become a pop phenomenon, to attend Ramapo College of New Jersey, in Mahwah. But a year later, Honor Society members were looking for a drummer, and a mutual friend introduced them to Noyes.

Each band member is a an avid Twitter user, communicating with fans as often as a laptop and a thought present themselves.

Honor Roll during Soundcheck

Jill's Denver Review!

Two Rebels @ Soundcheck

I originally planned on arriving at the venue in the morning, but I had to wait for my friends to get out of class. We drove down from Wyoming, and the drive took a lot longer than expected due to an accident on the road. We got to the venue around 3 and there was already a line. My friend Chris and I waited in line and had fun making friends. We met up with the girls who had been following them since the Portland show, which was really cool. When the gentlemen arrived, the teenies attacked and had a moment. They made their way to the front of the line and exchanged high fives, hand hugs, etc. The girls who had been following them surprised them by coming to Denver and the look on their faces was priceless. The gents entered the venue and began their sound check. Kat came out and started checking off those who won sound check passes. Kat gave us numbers so we wouldn’t lose our spot in line, which was awesome.

As we walked in for sound check, they were playing the new song, ‘Great Expectations.’ Michael broke the “no leather during sound check rule.” His excuse: “It’s OK, because this is a sound check party.” They played ‘Two Rebels,’ ‘Where Are You Now,’ and Jason did his cover of ‘Use Somebody.’ They also did their cover of ‘Battlefield.’ After the opened it up for questions. Someone asked Andrew to do his best pick up line in a southern accent. Jason decided to do it instead. They picked a few people to do the honor roll on stage with them. “Mad-E” (Esmee’s bass player) did it on stage with them as well. Another girl asked them to sing ‘Goodnight My Love.’ Someone asked what their favorite song to perform live was. I don’t remember everyone’s answer, but one said ‘Two Rebels,’ and Alex said ‘Here Comes Trouble.’ Sound check was awesome and I highly recommend joining the fan club for a chance to win!

When I came back outside, Chris was talking to Kat. Chris and I had brought a huge bag of animal crackers to munch on while waiting in line. He and Kat were bonding while munching on some animal crackers. The next day Kat tweeted: “Chris & his animal crackers got me to buy a bag today and everyone on the bus ate them! kudos to him :) & awesome seeing u!!” We chatted with Kat for a bit before she had to go back to work. Since we had numbers, we were free to go get food or whatevs. When it came time to line up for the show, everyone with numbers lined up in numbered order and those without numbers had to line up behind us. Chris and I stood in the front row right in between Michael and Jason. We passed the time by dancing and joking with our new friends. My other friends sat on a railing about five feet out from the stage.

Esmee Denters took the stage around 8 and the concert began. She was good, but her band is a lot louder than she is. I knew most of her songs and she interacted a lot with Chris and I. After Esmee was done, we were goofing around and dancing with our new friends. Honor Society took the stage and the party really started. I shared some intense eye contact with each band member. During ‘Two Rebels,’ Michael got down in front of me and asked “Will you become a rebel with me?” Of course I said yes. Michael and Esmee did a duet for ‘My Own Way’ and it was really good. Before ‘Here Comes Trouble,’ Michael always talks about how good looking the girls are in whatever city they are in. The crowd was screaming and going nuts. Michael was giving some speech about how girls are trouble and what not. He looked down at me and said: “You especially, you are trouble.” (I was wearing a tie dyed shirt that said “Here Comes Trouble” across the front). That was my favorite song to watch them perform live. I was dancing at Alex and he was laughing and attempting to dance while playing his drums. They cut ‘You Really Got Me’ from the set list. Everyone honor rolled during ‘See U in the Dark.’ My friends on the railing said it was really cool to watch everyone honor rolling on the floor. After the show, they threw pics, drum sticks, towels, etc into the crowd. Chris got one of Michael’s pics.

It was then time to line up for the Meet ‘n Greets. The fun club M&G’s went first and then the merch M&G’s. I was the last one to go for the fan club. I walked up and gave each member a pear (It’s something we started this summer during World Tour). They held up their pears and I held up a tie dyed shirt that said “GO PEARS!” I set their gift down and got ready for the next picture. My friends got to join in the next one. I put a “Gayne Wetsky” visor on Alex and Michael held up a sign that said happy birthday to one of my friends. We took a goofy shot and then got to chat for a bit. After the M&G, we went to the lobby and talked with Esmee. She is so sweet and so down to Earth. I had a really good time talking with her. My friends went to get food and my other friend and I stayed in the venue. We were sitting at the bar with Esmee’s band members. They are hilarious and were a blast to hang out with. As the merch M&G’s were ending, we went outside with “Mad-E” from Esmee’s band. We were hanging out by Silverado talking with Pete (HS’s sound guy). We were hanging with our friends from before having a blast with Esmee and her band. Some teenies were pressed up the windows of the venue stalking the gents. Kat came out and we talked with her for a while again. We decided it was getting too late and we should get on the road. We ended up not seeing them after the show, but it was alright because they were inside with one of Michael’s friends.

All in all, it was a great night. If you haven’t been to a Fashionably Late show yet, you need to go! It was so much different than World Tour and an absolute blast. I also highly suggest joining the fan club for a chance to go to sound check!

Annie's SD and LA Concerts Reviews

San Diego: The day started with school and my class ended around 2 p.m. because I had a midterm. My roommates and I drove 2 hrs. from LA to SD just to see Honor Society. We got there around 4 p.m. and there were already lots of people in line, so my friends and I bought t-shirts and other things to be the first group to be let in. I met people that I saw from concerts in the past. When we were finally being let in, I ended up being close to the stage. Esmee open for HS and she did a great job and is every talented. Then HS took the stage and I scream & sang the whole time. I wanted to do the Honor Roll during "See U In the Dark," but there wasn't room. HS put on a great show and I enjoyed myself. Afterwards, I had m&g with them and they remembered me because I promote them and see them in concert a lot. The last thing I told them was see you guys at the LA show!

Los Angeles: My friends and I arrived at HOB around 1 p.m. and there were so many people in front of us. So my best friend and I went to the front and talk to people who work there since we knew them and got to be the first group in again. I even bought more HS merchandise. While we were waiting outside, HS, Esmee and Emily Osment all arrived, but a different times of course. I screamed my lungs out to get their attention so they would wave at me and they did. A couple of hours before the show started, most of my friends and I got to be part of they DVD because we were 18 and over. The show was running late due to every artist needing to do soundcheck. When we were finally let in, I ran straight towards the front because I wanted to be close the stage (and I was cold). Emily Osment opened first and she was pretty good live. Esmee performed and then HS took the stage. It was such a crazy show with the fact that it was being filmed and JB were there. After the show, I had another m&g with the boys. I told them that i had an amazing time at both shows I went to and hope they enjoy the rest of the tour. This was the best HS experience ever!!!

Katie's Denver Concert Review

So me and my two friends arrived at the Bluebird around 1 p.m. There were about 12 people in front of us which really surprised us. We waited there for a long time and then around 3:30, Silverado pulled up in front of the venue. The roadies brought all the equipment in and then around 4:15 the boys and Kat and their bodyguard walked into the venue — some teenies had their moment.

We got into soundcheck and were about 2nd row. HS was singing their new song when we walked in — it seemed really bluesy and was awesome! Then they played "Two Rebels" and "Where Are You Now," then the "Use Somebody" cover, which was amazing, really, except for a few rough patches which makes sense since they haven't played it all that much. Then they took some questions. They picked me first for a question and I asked Andy to give me his best pick up line in a southern accent. He stumbled a little bit and didn't really want to do it so Jay did it. haha. He said, "Hey, did it hurt when you fell from heaven" in a pretty legit southern accent! Then they did the Honor Roll on stage with some girls and Michael serenaded some girl with "Goodnight My Love" and they played "Battlefield." I would definitely recommend soundcheck, so join the fanclub if you haven't!

Then we went back into line (they gave us numbers so we got back into our good spot). When we finally got back into the venue, we were front row! It was awesome. There wasn't a barrier so we were basically up on the stage. Esmee came on and the vocals were horrible on her set — we could barely hear her. She did a cover of "Closer," which was really good though. Then HS came on pretty quickly and sounded great! Those boys sure know how to make some intense eye contact. Before "Here Comes Trouble," Michael talked about how hot Colorado girls are. They didn't do an encore, and I guess they took the "You Really Got Me Now" cover out of their set, but it was so good for being short. Esmee and Mike did a duet to "My Own Way," which is so good. They have great chemistry. Overall, it was an amazing show.

We got through the m&g twice — the merch and the fan club one. They were all really energetic and it was one of my favorite meet and greets. They said they were stoked to come back.

Cd Review :Honor Society - Fashionably Late

The Celebrity Cafe (thanks to mr rosen for tweeting the link)

Up-beat, danceable melodies; catchy lyrics that are relatable to today’s youth—these elements and more are what sets Honor Societies second CD, “Fashionably Late,” apart from other’s in the same genre.

The CD includes a balance of danceable songs like “Full Moon Crazy” and “Here Comes Trouble” and slower, easy-listening songs like “Goodnight My Love” and “My Own Way.” Fans of pop, electronica, and even soft rock will enjoy this well-made CD that will have everyone blasting their car radios and singing along to the CD’s catchiest track, “Over You.” The songs are reminiscent of '80s pop music, which also made catchy lyrics and bubblegum melodies popular among the youth.

Though I am not normally a fan of pop, I do believe this CD is one that can be added to anyone’s music library and brought out as a guilty pleasure, for a party, and even for the gym. “Fashionably Late” is definitely a winner.

Update from Honor Society: Road Rulez!

A New Edition from the Honor Society Newsletter....

Hey Honor Rollers!

Let's review... we had our second SOLD OUT show at the Los Angeles House of Blues, we shot a music video with director, Shane Drake (Paramore, 'Crushcrushcrush' and Panic! At the Disco, 'Nine in the Afternoon') for our song 'Over You', and we had our first two headlining shows in Portland and Seattle!

On the set of the 'Over You' video shoot

In other HS news, we are busy in the lab coming up with some episodes of 'Tour Rulez'... we really want to be educators, dedicated to the advancement of tour lifestyle... haha. I mean seriously, NO leather at soundcheck... we didn't write the rules, you know the rules!

Speaking of soundchecks, we are now doing Soundcheck Parties before our Fashionably Late tour dates! Our first one went down in Seattle last Wednesday and it was really cool to be able to play such an intimate set to all of you in the crew. The plan is to play a short set of music, mixing songs off Fashionably Late with new material that we have been writing during this last tour. We are also going to be doing a question and answer session... so you can get all the behind the scenes madness and insights on all things HONOR SOCIETY.

Well, we are headed over to the venue right now... we are about half way through the 'Fashionably Late' tour, and we can not thank all of you enough for all the love and support! It has been amazing to travel across the country and see so many people out to shows... sometimes in cities that we have never played before. Thank you also to all the fans that helped us sell out New Jersey, Houston, Los Angeles, West Chester, PA, and Virginia... twice!

Love,
Your Gentlemen
Michael, Alexander, Jason and Andrew

Justine's Los Angeles Review

We get there around 9 in the morning! We were like all the way in the back it sucked. Then we go in the shop and they say if you buy something for $15 you get to go in first ! ahhh i ran to my mom and we bought like these bracelets so we are now the 2 group in line!

Around 3 Honor Society came out but in the front! They came out and did a heart sign to us! We also made signs like "Just the Pear of us" & "Pearty in the USA" haha.

Then they moved the line like a circle. It was really weird. By the time I knew it, It was dark and you could see the sunset. It was really pretty. By 5 Emily Osment showed up and said hi.

Then Esmee's band was showing up and some Jonas people too. By around 6:30 they started filming!! We all had our signs up soo I think you could see it in the DVD <3 Then it was finally 7:30!! but it sucked because they were late and everyone was chanting!! It was pretty funny but that's how LA goes!

Then we finally get in and it was supper cold in there it was awesome! Well Emily Osment goes and she was really good! We knew the drummer so we got to meet him after! It was really cool.

Esmee came out and everyone really liked her! She was greatt! '

Then HS came out and it was just CRAZYYY ! it was it was loud and even Michael was like wow!

Jordan's L.A. Review!

We (my sister and I) started our day by going over to the Grove to check out the acoustic set. We got there about two hours early and ended up fairly close to the front of the line, on the third floor of Barnes and Noble. We met some awesome girls in line and were glad to have some cool people to talk to for the wait, joking about buying awkward books for them to sign since no one really knew what the deal was and if they were going to have their own pictures to sign. The boys arrived a little after noon (fashionably late as always) and then security let us into the back corner where there is a little stage where all the signings are hosted (we met Miley Cyrus there too) and where the guitars/mics were set up. Then a B&N manager (?) introduced the band and they came out for the set! We ended up third row between Mike and Jay. They played “Over You,” “Two Rebels,” and “See U in the Dark,” to which everyone did the Honor Roll of course. After the set they left so that security could get us into a new line for the signing, which we ended up being in the middle of.

Michael was first and I was pretty sure he recognized me from previous events so I walked up to him and asked how he was doing (he did the same) and told him to have so much fun that night. He asked me if I was coming and I said “of course!” so he smiled and gave me a fist pound. Next was Jason and I told him how my best friend and I believe that his shades have magical healing powers (long story—inside joke) and he said that it was true “they’re a little rusty right now, but they are magical,” which made my day because now he’s in on the joke too. Then Andy’s turn, basically I told him how I bought him a Mickey Mouse top hat from Disneyland for an early birthday present, but the one of the ears broke off (they were stapled on, cheap Disney!) and how I tried to tape it but then it looked ghetto and broke again! I can’t remember exactly what he said (he probably thought I was crazy, oops) but Alex was very amused by the idea of that and laughed and said something about “looking ghetto in a Mickey Mouse hat” to him, then Andy was like “oh it’s the thought that counts!” Then Alex signed my FL card and smiled at me and I told him goodbye.

After that we grabbed some food and drove over to the HOB by 1:30. By then the priority merch line had already formed, so we decided to go ahead and buy stuff so we could wait in the shade. Before we went in the camera crew filmed us screaming to get in (I didn’t go teenie but a lot of people did) and they walked right next to us, so maybe you’ll see me in the dvd! We saw Rob Hoffman walk into the venue too, which was pretty awesome for us. The show started really late; it was supposed to start at 7:30 but they didn’t let us in until after 8, I’m not sure why there was a delay. As soon as we got in we went to the merch table to get our HS Crew M&G wristbands from Kat and then went to the pit. I’d say we were about 7 rows from the stage, Jason’s side. First out was Emily Osment, who I honestly was not looking forward to but she proved me wrong. She’s a decent singer and a good performer, and really pretty. Plus, her keyboard player is really cute! Then Esmee, who was amazing. I’m definitely a new fan of hers.

Finally, Honor Society was up! The show was absolutely incredible. The crowd was one of the most fun and energetic I’ve been in, even compared to the crowd at the Staples Center for the JBWT, that’s how much we love our gentlemen. They were all on fire from the first song until the last. I loved the “My Own Way” duet with Esmee--it was so hot! The new intro for “Here Comes Trouble” is so good; Michael talked about all the “hot girls” in LA. During “Where Are You Now” Michael sang “to our LA fans and sing alongs in my car” *cue screaming* During “Why Didn’t I” and “Nobody Has To Know” Jason made all kinds of funny faces and hand motions to act out the songs and kept making me laugh. In the speech before “Don’t Close The Book,” Michael mentioned how LA has “been here since the beginning.” It was so sweet to see them touched by the crowd. After “Over You” we cheered for a good two minutes and watched them soak it all in, which I’m so glad was filmed. It was one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to.

We had to wait about 40 minutes after the concert for the fanclub M&G, which was on the balcony. The girls in front of us were really hyper 14 year old teenies (oh dear..), but at least that always makes us look actually normal. Alex was off to the side dancing to all the songs but no one else seemed to be dancing with him, so when “The Way You Make Me Feel” came on right before our turn we started dancing along with him. We ended up dancing with Alex and Jason while hand hugging them (since Kat said no real hugs, which was fine). So now dancing with them is our new M&G tradition, since we also did at Pomona (which was epic and hilarious). Then I hand hugged and said hey to Andrew, and Michael rubbed my shoulder while we got ready for our picture. After we took it we thanked them and told them how amazing they did, and my sister showed Michael that she changed the time of her clock necklace (which he had complimented at B&N because it matched the FL motif) to 3:43, and he told her he loved it. Now, the part that proves what an angel Mike really is. My sister had been debating telling them about how a friend of hers committed suicide earlier that week and how much they (and the whole concert) was really helping her, so right after the picture she told Mike as I started to walk away. He said “say what?” and gave her such a genuine look of concern, so she explained and then thanked him for everything. A security guy started yelling at us to move on, but Michael just grabbed and hugged her and told her thank you, and Andy rubbed her shoulder. It was so sweet, and after we left she almost started crying because she was so touched by it. We always knew how great they are, but that just proved it again.

Sorry for the essay, but October 17th was one of the best days of my life. Every time I see them I have a deeper love and appreciation for them.

Justine's August 2 Los Angeles Review

On August 2 my sister and I went to see Honor Society again and it got even more crazy.

The day before we were planning, okay were going to get up at 6 and be at the hob around 7 (: well they tweeted and said come to downtown disney and were going to be doing a accoustic performance I freaked out!

We got there as soon as they finished. It was too crowed to take a pic with them so we just waited in line (: We ate there so by the time we had snacks and met really nice people!

Then all of a sudden you hear them start singing! Everyone freaked out! It was awesome. Ned comes out with Kat and they do a honor roll contest! I didn't win because i was in the back but I danced!

After that we all got to go in. We were 3 people from the stage<3 the lights dimmed and Care Bears On Fire came on! They had a lot of songs and gave us free shirts! It was cool!

Then Honor Society comes out!! I freaked out like always and started to scream and sing full moon crazy. While they sang Don't Close The Book, Michael was like I need you lovely girls to scream oh oh oh oho as loud as you can so mickey mouse could hear! It was pretty funny.

Then the show ended and they did a dance party and it was CRAZYYYY it was LOUUDDD ! but fun.

Marissa's Columbus Review

My friends and I arrived to the venue around 3:30PM in our homemade t-shirts. We walked over to get a picture of Silverado then went back to our spots in line and made signs that said, "Honk if you love Honor Society."

The guys came out and said hi to all of us as well before going into soundcheck. We had a lot of fun with that =] Doors opened at 6 and we ran to get merch first to make sure we got our wrist bands for M&G. Then we took spots at the back of the venue, because it was the only place we all would fit. We decked ourselves out in our glow sticks and took some pictures.

First up was Esmee and she was awesome. After her set, she walked right by us and gave us all hand hugs, as did her band. Then, we saw the Gents making their way towards us so we stayed quiet to make sure we could give them all hand hugs. Mission accomplished.

They opened with Full Moon Crazy and it was awesome. There was so much energy coming from the crowd and you could see the guys were so excited to be there. After the show, we got hand hugs from them again =] Once everyone had cleared out, my friends and I walked towards the stage to see what we could find. We ended up working our magic and walking away with four picks and a drumstick =]

At M&G, my friend Candace decided to push me to move faster and I tripped in front of Andy, who played it off and engulfed me in a hug. I hugged all the guys, we took our picture and then said goodbye. We also got a picture with Esmee and her band. After that, we went and waited by Silverado, but they didn't have time to come say Hi. Overall, it was an awesome show and I can't wait to go see them again November 2nd and 3rd.

More photos under the cut!

Justine's March 28, 2009 HOB Review

On the 28th my sister and I got there around 7:30am. We were exactly the 4th people in line. We stood there for about 7 hours just laying down and making posters. Around 5 a lot of celebs start showing up like Tiffany Thorton and Jack Nicholson.

Then about 5:30 the gents came in right in front of us. They said hi to us and were the sweetest people ever. Around 8 they let us in. KSM went on first! It was an absolute surprise to have them come, plus they did an acoustic set.

Then it was Honor Society! I had a blast and the best part was, that the crowd was literally over Michael it was pretty funny (: then while they sang "goodnight my love" The Jonas Brothers came! It was awesome! Nick was in the back but you could still see him. they were dancing and clapping their hands! Then Don't Close The Book came on and the Jonas Brothers came out and it got crazy!

We met them after. It was really fast but i got to hung Michael <3 haha

Rainalyn's Los Angeles Review

Me and two of my best friends got there at around 10 AM. The line was already fairly long, with about 40 people in front of us, I'm guessing. We just sat and waited. We got Starbucks, passed time, etc. Then my friend Lizzy and I went to go see if they were selling merch. Then my other friend Lidia calls me and says that they're starting the thing where you buy $15 of merchandise and they let you in first. So we get our stuff and get in the new line.

Lidia and Lizzy went to the bathroom at around 2:30. Then a car with tinted windows drove in, everyone screamed and waved, which wasn't new. But as I looked CLOSER, I saw Jason's familiar shades. Hello gents. :) They went and got out, and I was one of the ONLY ONES who got out of line and got closer. Mike and Andy made cute little hearts. <3

Hours later we got into the actual line and could hear them sound checking! We were singing along and eventually started singing "Snackin' on a Pear"! They have some of the best fans.

At around 7:15, they brought the camera out and started filming the lines and people doing "See U in the Dark" singing and Honor Roll sessions.

FINALLY they let us in. It was packed, no room at all.
Emily Osment first, then break then Esmee, then break.
Then the lights went out...
-SCREEEEEEAM!!!!!!!-

HONOR SOCIEEEETTYYYYY!!!
Looking gorgeous as ALWAYS and they opened with Full Moon Cuh-razy ;)
Alex needs to come up more, I could hardly see the gorgeous boy!
Andy was ALL OVER THE PLACE! Hahahahaa! Lidia was all like "Andy needs to stop jumping around so much! I can't get a good picture!"
Mike's vocals were amazing as usual, and Jay was just STUNNING. Period.

I honestly forgot what song was next, I was just SO happy that they were finally performing. If you have never seen Honor Society live in concert, then you don't know what I'm talking about. It's just that you CANNOT believe that they're right there!

Andy looked like he had a bucket of water thrown on him. He was sweating SOO MUCH! And Mike's v-neck revealed quite an amount of skin... Someone yelled "TAKE IT OFF MIKE!!!" HAHA.

At some point Jay threw his sunglasses on the floor. Like WHOOA - yeeeah ;D
During "Two Rebels", we held a sign up. I drew a detailed picture of the Two Rebels sign (the peace sign) and the poster was pretty big too. Mike noticed it and smiled.

When Esmee came out for "My Own Way", and when her and Mike got SUPER CLOSE, the crowd went wild. Like WILD WILD. I honestly was in minor shock too - I mean remove the mics and I legit swear they were CENTIMETERS away from each other. Intense, and hot.

During "Don't Close the Book", I teared up. It's always been an emotional song to listen to, especially watch live, as you see that Mike somehow has a strong connection with this song, you can see it. And they had a minor speech in the beginning.

Ahhh, "Where Are You Now". In which Mike said, "Thank you guys! You guys have been here from the very beginning!" :)

MY SECOND FAVORITE SONG! "Here Comes Trouble" <3 I LOVED how in the beginning Mike said that there were "a lot of hot girls here" in Los Angeles. And in the background you can see Andy and Alex just shrug their shoulders and smile. The crowd went W I L D. Gosh, Mike, you are such a flirt :)

I guess I shouldn't review EVERY SONG - since they were all AMAZING AND INDESCRIBABLE.

But during "See U in the Dark", we couldn't even Honor Roll. It was so packed, but it was just amazing. I looked on the balcony and saw some older mid-aged people smiling and bobbing along. WIN!

Then, they threw their stuff in the audience, said goodbye and said thanks. They walked off, and... it was over.
I miss them already, :(

But it was a day to remember, my first time waiting a long time for a band or singer. But it's all worth it.

- Rainalyn

PS. Here are some videos:

^ Here Comes Trouble, includes the speech in the beginning.

^ Two Rebels, started late.

^ Over You, out of focus, but you can hear the crowd singing along :)

Article: Honor Society's roots in rock, soul

Deseret News

Honor Society keyboardist/guitarist Jason Rosen says his band's music sounds deceptively simple. That belies the fact that two founding members — Rosen and lead vocalist/guitarist Michael Bruno — graduated from Boston's Berklee School of Music and the New York University School of Music, respectively.

Also, bassist Andrew Lee is an alumnus of Hartford School of Music.

"There's a lot that gets thrown at you," Rosen said during a telephone interview from Philadelphia. "There's a lot of theory and a lot of performance stuff and music technology stuff."

Rosen said there was so much that all the learning didn't really set in until after he graduated.

"We draw upon those educational practices," he said. "They are like tools in our toolbox."

Music has always been an important part of Rosen's life. When he was young, his parents introduced him to the Beatles, Motown and '50s and '60s doo wop groups.

"Later on I definitely got into Stevie Wonder because of the keyboards and his use of synths. And then I got into a lot of prog-rock like Yes. And in the '80s there was definitely Michael Jackson and then Prince."

Rosen's first instrument was piano.

"My family had gotten a piano from my grandma," he said. "Later on I started playing guitar and the drums.

"I think it's cool to be able to play different instruments. And having an understanding of multiple instruments helps with the arrangements and stuff.

"It's cool to write on different instruments," he said. "On guitar you might write one way and on piano you might write another way. It's cool to be able to go back and forth."

Honor Society was formed out of Rosen's and Bruno's love for rock and soul music. And when the other two — Lee and former Jonas Brothers drummer Alexander Noyes — joined the band, there was already a plan in place.

The plan, said Rosen, is to continue playing music that consists of rock and soul.

"That sound and idea has carried through all the way to (the new CD) 'Fashionably Late.' "

After releasing two extended plays, the band recorded "Fashionably Late," it's full-length debut.

Honor Society worked with producer John Fields, who has worked with Switchfoot and Jimmy Eat World.

"Typically we did a song a day," Rosen said. "(John's) whole vibe is that he's very open to ideas. He's very much a collaborative producer. And he is also a multi-instrumentalist."

Rosen said Fields was great at catching the band in the moment.

"He would say 'Show me this keyboard part you have in mind.' And I would play it and then I'd say, 'When are we going to record it?' and he'd say, 'Oh, we just did.' "

Fields' and Honor Society's chemistry has worked well for "Fashionably Late." It debuted on No. 18 on the Billboard 200, and the band has been named a breakout band by Rolling Stone magazine and deemed "Buzzworthy" by MTV.

The band also opened for the Jonas Brothers and Jordin Sparks this past spring.

"I don't know if you can ever really be prepared for (all the above)," Rosen said. "But we always just focus on making the best music we can and having the greatest shows we can and really just pushing ourselves and being accessible to the fans."

Honor Society following Jonas Brothers' wave of success

The Salt Lake Tribune

If the Jonas Brothers get their way, in the near future minivans all over the country will bear bumper stickers proclaiming "My Child Is a Fan of Honor Society."

Honor Society is a New York-based pop-rock band that's the first talent to be signed to the Jonas Brothers' label, and the group will perform at the Murray Theater Oct. 24.

Like the Jonas Brothers, band members challenged the label "boy band." "We don't get the reference," said Alexander Noyes, drummer for Honor Society. "Through touring, and our live show, they'll realize we're not a boy band."

The good-looking, fresh-scrubbed quartet released its debut album, "Fashionably Late," on Sept. 15, after touring all summer with the Jonas Brothers and Jordin Sparks. The album debuted at No. 18 on the Billboard album charts, a remarkable ranking for a new band.

Part of the reason for the band's popularity is that each band member is a relentless addict to Twitter, communicating with fans as often as a laptop and a thought present themselves. As of the afternoon of Oct. 20, the band had 59,613 followers (twitter.com/honorsociety), while each band member has thousands of his own followers.

They aren't planning to join Tweeters Anonymous meetings anytime soon, because the band has also initiated a series of meet-and-greets using Twitter. When Honor Society visited Los Angeles for the first time, Nick Jonas took the band members to a Pinkberry frozen-yogurt shop, and since then they can't get enough of the tart soft-serve dessert. Whenever they visit a Pinkberry or similar eatery that serves tart frozen yogurt, they send tweets inviting fans to join them.

"We made it a tradition," Noyes said. "Pinkberry Corporate loves it. Between 400 and 500 people come every time."

The band was formed in 2007 in Rockland County, N.Y., a Manhattan suburb with an active music scene. Lead singer and guitarist Michael Bruno, keyboardist Jason Rosen and bassist Andrew Lee were seeking a drummer when they got a recommendation to look up Noyes, who had been a drummer for the Jonas Brothers.

Problem was, Noyes had given up music and planned on attending college. "We pulled Alexander out of retirement," Lee said.

The band, armed with pop songs influenced by radio-friendly R&B and urban sounds, embraced social networking, building a rabid fan base seeking the next Jonas Brothers. It didn't hurt that Rolling Stone touted Honor Society as a breaking band to watch in 2009.

Earlier this year, after Honor Society sold out shows at New York's Irving Plaza and Los Angeles' House of Blues, it was only a matter of time before the quartet caught the ears of the Jonas Brothers, nascent music producers.

Chances are, while in town, Honor Society might get wind of Lunaberry, a tart frozen-yogurt shop at 358 S. 700 East. If you're one of the group's online followers, perhaps you'll get invited for a local fro-yo appearance.

Emily's Portland Review!

My day started off good untill I found out Honor Society was going to be in Tualatin. So far away from where I lived. Guess where i was at when it was going on? School. BLAH.

Then my day got even better when the clock hit 3. I got out of school early with my friend Chelsea. My mom was nice enough to take us early to meet up with our other friends. When we got to The Hawthorne Theater, there were only like 10 to 15 people there. Chelsea and I really had to go use the restroom and Fred Meyers was straight across the street. We headed over there and walked around. We found the bathrooms and ended up running into our friend Stephanie. When we got out of the bathroom, we decided to buy some USA Pears. (It was National Pear Day). We got our pears and went back to the Theater.

About 7:00ish or so, they finally let us in the doors. YAY! We walked in and some people were already there. I guess when you're over 21 and you can get into the bar, they let you into the show early. BOO lol just kidding.

Chelsea and I took turns holding spots so one of us could go and buy some merch and we ended up getting meet and greet passes for after the show. I got a bag that said SEE U In The Dark with Honor Society under it. I was short a dollar for a shirt :(.

The Show started at 8 with Esmee Denters and her band. She was amazing. Her single Outta Here was great to hear live. She does a lot of dances move and she is very good at them. Finally she took a picture of the Portland crowd and posted it on twitter. She is amazing. She got done about 8:45 or 9 ish.

THEN THE MOMENT CAME! Honor Society came on. Started with Full Moon Crazy. They did amazing last night.

I couldn't of spent a school night any other way. Last song was See U In The Dark. We all tried doing the Honor Roll. Doesn't work in a tight place with tons of girls surrounded you lol. A few times, I touched Michael's hand and Jason looked at me before playing Over You. Best thing ever. When they got done, they announced how they would do meet and greets. Fan club meet and greets first and then merch meet and greets. The fanclub meet and greets went by really fast. Then the merch meet and greets started. I was so excited. First Alex signed mine then Jason, Mike and finally Andy. We had a great talk. Andy was like hey how are you? I said hey i am good. great show. Then he finally asked me if we come back, are you going to go? I was like yes. He asked Is that a promise? I looked at him and said yes! Then he asked me my name and shook my hand.

Chelsea and I went outside to the back of the parking lot and tried waiting for them. Chelsea asked Kat if we could get a picture with them and she said if you wait outside by the bus in the parking lot, they would see. So we went to the back of the parking lot and The Silverado and Esmee's bus were there. We met one of Esmee's band members and we ended up meeting Esmee as well. She is so sweet. She gave us all signed posters and we all gave her hugs. Then finally after awhile, we saw Honor Society go onto their bus but they never got off.

Katy's Portland Review!

From Katy, @katybear1990

The gentlemen of Honor Society did a free acoustic performance in Portland Oregon at noon the day of the concert. It was held at a local Haggen's grocery store in the garden area. Not more than 15 fans showed up. It was cold and a little rainy outside but the group of us held tight even though our boys were about half an hour 'Fashionably Late'. The Gents strolled around the corner of the building to less than enthusiastic screams, which Michael made a point to make fun of when he got in front of his microphone. In our defense it was cold and rainy waiting for them. Once they started playing though, everyone got really pumped up and we were singing every word to every song.

They played a total of 3 songs, before they put down their guitars and mingled with the group of us. They talked to us and signed autographs (I got my CD signed) and everyone was allowed to take a group photo with the guys. They were there for about an hour before they were whisked away into the store to get lunch from the deli. I too entered the store to get something to eat. However I was walking and texting on my phone at the same time, so I wasn't watching where I was going and ran into a cash register. Hearing laughing behind my I turned to see Michael and Jay standing behind me laughing at my stupidity. They smiled at me and waved. I waved back before getting out of there because I was embarrassed.

The show was amazing! Esmee rocked the stage, although her microphone wasn't working correctly at first so it was hard to hear her over her band. She did a wonderful job before leaving the stage only to have out Gentlemen fill it not long after. The energy was high and the songs were rockin'. Half way through the set Esmee returned to the stage to sing "My Own Way" with the guys, however her mic was not working so she and Mike had to stand super close and share a microphone before Mike finally told her to take Jay's. The rest of the show went on without a flaw. I held hands with Alex during the beginning of "Don't Close the Book" and Andy kept throwing pics out into the audience to the point that he didn't have any. It was a truly amazing show.

Afterward they met virtually everyone in the club, granted you did have to buy something to get the meet and greet where they signed something you bought. I won a meet and greet through the fan club and got to take a picture with them as well.

This night was one of the best nights of my life, and I was sad to see it end. They all stated that they loved Portland, so hopefully they'll come back soon.

Esmee Denters and Honor Society in Portland Review

Thanks to Mr Rosen for tweeting this article from On Portland (head over to their site to see some photos!)

What thin line divides a band like Honor Society from the The Jonas Brothers? Why is Miley Cirus selling out stadiums while Emsee Denters plays to a crowd of just a few hundred? Musically you could stand Esmee Denters single "Outta Here" and Honor Society "Over You" against the songs from either the Jonas Brothers or Miley Cirus's, but in the business of big pop bands, music is only part of the equation.

Both Esmee Denters and Honor Society got their breaks through various social networks. Esmee was discovered doing covers of her favorite songs on YouTube while Honor Society found their following via MySpace. As they played to a small but devoted following, many of the teens in the crowd sang along to almost every word of every song. As Esmee finished her set, she stopped and took a picture of the crowd to post on her twitter account (@emseeeworld). Honor Society spent more time after their show meeting their fans than they did playing to them. This kind of personal connection between artist and fan is something that's being taken to an entirely new level. But it is enough?

Esmee's opening set was short, sweet, and slightfully soulful. Touching on some of her most notable work, including "Outta Here", Esmee showed the advantages of texture and range for a female pop performer. Her music was a nice bridge between the bubblegum pop tunes of a Hannah Montana and a more soulful pop star like Joss Stone. Unfortunately her cover of Ne-Yo's "Closer" felt more like something out of American Idol than something from a teen pop idol. Esmee did ultimately show off her talent and inventiveness with a reinvisioning of the classic song "I Only Have Eyes For You", a nice fusion of classic sounds with a modern beat. Esmee returned to the stage mid way through Honor Society's set to do a duet which I also liked.

I had previously seen Honor Society as one of the opening bands when The Jonas Brothers played The Rose Garden. Although the crowd at the Hawthorne Theater was about 1% of that when they played the Rose Garden, Honor Society brought the same high level stadium intensity and performance. Playing songs from their new album "Fashionably Late", Honor Society had a few stand out songs, any of which could carry them onward to bigger and better spaces. Of particular note is the bonus track from the album "Where Are You Now", their current single "Over You" and the song that brought them into radio airplay "See You in The Dark". As with Esmee Denters music there was a clear line between the Honor Society songs that hit their mark and the ones that missed, but in this era of iTunes and digital downloads a few strong songs seems to hold more weight over a one solid album.

The only real low point of the evening came at the end of the concert. In this little club with no more than 150 people, Honor Society set up a paid meet and greet. Rather than work to build their fan base they took the opportunity to charge their fans to buy a wrist band that gave them the privilege to meet the band and have them sign autographs. All this took place three feet from the stage in the already tiny club. What's worse is that they issued two different colored wristbands, one for the members of their fan club and another for people who weren't. The entire thing was both odd, uncomfortable and completely out of place in the club atmosphere.

If you need proof that the music industry is in an entirely odd space, look no further than the Esmee Denters and Honor Society club tour. Both bands seem to have all the essential elements of a big pop tour and yet it was booked into a small club with very little promotion. Which brings me back to my initial question: What is it really that separates the mega-pop bands from bands like these? Because in this case the answer doesn't seem to be MySpace, YouTube and Twitter.

Here's a video from the concert of Honor Society performing "See You in The Dark":

Ashley's Review of Rock the Fall (Palmerton, PA)

Honor Society Rocks The Fall, No Duh!

I was so excited to go see Honor Society at a venue that was semi close to where I go to school. Unfortunately, they really don't have any more planned besides this that was on a weekend, or in a place convenient for me to travel to during the week. I will only travel to places within 4 hours of me, and I won't go over an hour and a half if I have class the next day.

Anyway, so we get to this festival called "Rock the Fall" in Palmerton, Pennsylvania. The weather was pretty crappy, and the event itself pretty much sucked. What was worse was definitely the strict no cameras rule. As well all know, hiding cameras in random places in your bag or your pockets usually are let through since they are unseen. Rock the Fall was complete security overkill. They were legitimately doing pat downs for cameras and other "illegal" concert necessities. Later, we found out that it was artist's request that there be no cameras allowed in or used, period (when i say allowed, I was told to put mine away aduring the concert after I had snuck it in. Yes, they WERE that strict). Based on those performing that day, we narrowed it down to Drake Bell being the reason that cameras were not allowed.

The line up was Tiffany Giardina, V Factory, Care Bears on Fire, Honor Society, and last was Drake Bell. Tiffany Giardina did a really good cover of "Candy" by Mandy Moore, but most of the songs that she performed ended up being covers. Her songs were good and I would probably listen to her more if I had her music. Her guitarist (who is kind of an asshole...totally selling himself off to illegal teenies instead of trying to talk to people of legal age) did a really good cover of "Use Somebody" by Kings of Leon.

There was no merch meet and greet for Honor Society that day, but because Kat had tweeted that she was going to try to work something out, we stood in line at the merch tent for most of V Factory's performance. We then realized that our group actually had gotten fan club meet and greets and standing in that line was basically a waste of our time. The meet and greet ended up being held outside the strict security so cameras and gifts were allowed..this was especially good since the gifts that I had brought them were not exactly concert appropriate.

The meet and greet was really fun; it was great to see them again. I apologized//explained about not being able to go to the Toronto show (it ended up that I had a 9:30 am class at Syracuse and would not have been able to get back there in time for it) and then gave them all their gifts and Jason his late birthday present that I was going to give to him in Toronto...I told them to look in their bags and their reactions were so cute. I'm hoping they did like what I got what I got them/made them...Wish I could find out haha.

I got hugs from all of the guys, and yes, Jason still gives the best hugs, but I'm open to be proven wrong haha...After that, we took our HS Where Are You Now picture with the CD and the Rock the Fall banner and then went back into the venue to watch Care Bears on Fire, which...they really aren't a favorite of mine.

Honor Society's performance was by far the most energetic and had the most fans dancing and in to the concert. The gentlemen put on a high energy, totally awesome show. I always have fun at their shows, and today was definitely another one to add to the count. As miserable as Rock the Fall was, their performance completely made up for it. Jason saw a sign that my friend had made for him that I got to hold that said "I heart Jason" and we got eye contact, smiles, and nods from all of the guys throughout the show. Mike also threw his pick at me, which (coincidentally?) went right down my shirt. It fell out out the bottom and a bunch of girls started looking at it, but it ended up being under my shoe and I was able to keep it. Now all I need is a drumstick and I've got something from each of them.

We waited by the fence after the performance, but they ended up getting in to a van and leaving for their flight to Houston. Earlier I had given Kat the name of an amazing restaurant there...I've gone there for my whole life and its basically the best Mexican food one will ever eat. I'm not sure if they ended up going there, but if not, hopefully they will have time to go there when/if they return to Houston.

While we waited to see what was going on (if they were going to have a general meet and greet or not)We met some girls and started talking to them. One of them had caught Jason's pic and had dropped it out by the fence. We pretty much organized a search party using cell phones and eventually the golf cart from the venue (getting them involved too, as well as random people who were standing around)helped us with its lights to find the pic in the grass. We were unable to find it and we are pretty sure that someone picked it up and stole it, but claimed innocence. Some fans really suck. The girls were sweet and we kind of became friends which was cool. It's nice to talk to older fans instead of the younger teen fans, and its nice to see that Honor Society in fact DOES have a strong 18 and over fan base.

Los Angeles Concert Review

We got to the House Of Blues at 9:30am & the line was already soooo long! Thankfully we bought $15 of merch & headed up to the front of the line.

We were super close! Only one girl was in front of me and than there was the stage. Every one wanted to see the boys already! I made a sign that said "Just the Pear of Us" <3 & was determined to show Andrew.

It got dark again. All of a sudden Honor Society runs out! Every one starts screaming & the show begins! It was amazing. & the camera crew was right on us soo hopefully we'll be in the DVD (& so will my sign xD) During the show Alex pointed to me & my sister & during "Here Comes Trouble" Michael pointed to me and said "especially you, you're trouble" !! It was crazy. The crowd was sooooo LOUD! The boys were even surprised.

After the show we got out M&G passes and headed upstairs. We first said hi to Jason. He remembered us! & then it was Alex. I asked him for a hug <3 ahh! haha & then Michael. He said I looked sooo happy & gave me a hand hug. Andrew said he read my sign during the show! Then they all signed it which was amazing.

My sister also got to hug Michael. She had them all sign her drumsticks & was going crazy because Michael put a heart next to his name lol Andrew just put his initials & showed us his water bottle which he always puts his initials on.

This HS concert was the best one I've ever been too! So many amazing Honor Society fans there.
I loved it!
